Derek is not Dead
I am not dead and I still love this site!
Despite fallacious rumours spread by my colleague, which suggested that I had both resolved and failed to post (failure suggests trying), Derek is not dead and he plans to post more regularly in 2014. I am not resolute about it, mind you; I simply plan on it. My biggest struggle with the site (beyond my ludicrous schedule in the fall) is based around indecision with what I should do with it. And so I will rant about that a little today, and then later tonight post a short review or something… though I haven’t seen or read or played anything fantasy related and relevant in awhile.
Last year, I had to sellout and remove almost 1/3 of my posts because of intellectual property issues stemming from my own research (which I was releasing here before official channels, a big no-no) and my relationship with academia; my less theoretical world-building projects are still allowed (and I will continue weekly posts about the Ikan campaign setting) but that’s both a limited well to tap and tied into a bigger project – an official PDF campaign setting booklet on which I’m working and hope to sell for pennies under Creative Commons. I have an article on syntax in story-telling in the works, but that probably only excites me while not stirring potential readers; what’s left is strengthening my relationship with the actual act of D&D, and the posting of short stories. Unlike prolific Kevin, however, my work dribbles out of me in an unshowable mess, and thesis-ing robs me of the time required to make it presentable. I’m left with a blog in which I can’t blog about the easiest topics because of professional reasons, and my other topics are fast becoming liabilities.
So this is what I’ve reached: I will do a weekly update post on Atemicia, with slightly less structure than last years: the more structured version is being collected for PDF release in August (I guess this is an announcement for that, so official announcement awaaaaay). My other weekly post will be a speculative fiction review. My special topic posts will come out when they come out.
Excited to be back blogging nonetheless, but unsure of exactly what I have to say here. I’m sure something will congeal. Happy 2014!
